The convergence of Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS) and 3G technology, has made video sharing with the use of cell phones a reality. This was most evident immediately after the Dec. 26, 2005 Tsunami, the London Bombings of July 7, 2005, and the execution of Saddam Hussein (which was captured by a guard using his video cell phone). During that Tsunami and the London Bombing, the initial video news coverage were from regular phone subscribers who were right on the scene. This immediacy during those events were an important turning points in news coverage. Nowadays, a lot of viral media comes from regular phone subscribers who share videos directly from their cell phones.

Like most digital still cameras, camera cell phones are also capable of video. The main difference is in the resolution and the frame rate. Low-level videos have a minimum frame rate of 8 frames per second (fps). Most video cell phone cameras save to 3GPP format video, which is based on the H.263 standard video compression. This format has a low of 10fps with a 176x144 pixel size. The LG KC910 has an 8-megapixel still camera which can record in VGA quality (640x480 pixels) at 30fps. It can also do 120fps at QVGA resolution (320x240 pixels). The Sony Ericsson C510 and W508 camera cell phones not only take still pictures and videos, and share them via MMS, these cameras also have built-in YouTube client software for easy uploading to the internet.

Because not all used camera cell phones on the secondhand market have video capabilities, it would be good to check the specifications first to check for this feature. Video capability in an MMS phone may or may not be for everyone, but when buying or selling a used mobile phone, there's not much difference in price between a used cell phone with a built-in still camera and a used video cell phone.
