Used Camera Cell Phones
For the teen and young adult market, camera cell phones have been the cell phone of choice. So much so, that more than half of all cell phones sold have built-in cameras. That translates to more than 1 billion camera phones shipped in 2008. There are several convergent technologies which made camera cell phones a reality. The development of the CMOS sensor made it possible to miniaturize a camera on a chip which would use a lot less power than the older CCD technology. Another technology is that of MMS, or Multi-media Messaging Services, which enabled the sharing of pictures and other media files from one phone to another.
Early cell phones with a camera capability made use of an external camera which produced a VGA resolution (640x240 pixel) picture, among these were the Siemens SL55 and the Nokia 6810. One of the first camera phones with a built-in flash unit is Samsung the From APSI, a Korean company, the Thuraya SG-2520 is considered as the first satellite phone with an integrated camera. The push for better picture quality has made possible the release of models capable of larger pictures with finer resolution. Sony-Ericsson has a large number of cell phone cameras under their Cybershot series phones. Among the latest models, the Samsung INNOV8 (i8510) has an 8-megapixel camera. This clearly blurs the distinction between a camera and a cell phone. It won't be long till the time comes when only entry-level cell phones would not have built-in cameras.
The trend towards a camera capability carries over to the secondhand market for mobile phones. Although the majority of used cell phones on the market do not have built-in cameras, it would be only a matter of time before this reverses in favor of cell phone cameras. And except for older cell phones with external cameras, the support and turnover of for used cell phone cameras is still a growing trend.
